I love religion

I’ve enjoyed visiting other countries, and it’s inevitable that notable houses of worship are included on the sightseeing lists. Most of those visits took place when I was college age or a little older, and the idea that I was an atheist hadn’t crossed my mind at all, although I really was one even then.

I did feel distanced from the religious history of the buildings, because most of them were Christian or Catholic and I was just starting to get more connected to my own Jewish history. But that never stopped me from being awed by the sheer dedication and artistry that went into building these monuments. When I viewed the striped cathedral of Siena or admired the unique blue stained glass of Chartres cathedral, I thought about the people who created these things so long ago, and all the immense work it took for so many years.

In a way I took a humanistic view of the buildings, although that word wouldn’t have meant anything to me at the time. Of course, yes, they were inspired by the evil Catholic church or other corrupt, money-hungry sects of whatever. That fact remains. But even though the first U.S. transcontinental railroad was partly built by what amounted to Chinese slave labor, can’t we still admire the feat?

Without religion, the requiems by Mozart, Brahms, Fauré, Verdi, and others wouldn’t exist. (Actually quite a lot of music wouldn’t exist; I’m just picking out a few.) Imagine the elimination of nearly all music from Gregorian chants to the Baroque era. Both religious patronage and inspiration helped to create that music, but I can’t imagine a world without it. In high school, I sang in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Christmas cantata Hodie, and the fact that it’s about the birth of Christ didn’t do a thing to dent the pure, amazing joy of singing that music in a beautiful hall with a full choir and orchestra.

And then there’s the enormous, secular body of literature, theatre, and film based on stories from religious texts. Okay, the world could probably live without Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but supernatural Greek and Biblical myths alone are the basis for more of our libraries than I’d want to see disappear.

When I saw the Book of Kells, there was nothing religious to me about it. It was impossible to read, but that didn’t stop me from admiring the beautiful illumination by talented scribes. They may have been inspired by Jesus but I didn’t have to see it in that context: it was a work of art. The same went for the poster of Dali’s Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) that I hung in my apartment during college. There are many things that made me love that painting, perhaps more on the Corpus Hypercubus side than the Crucifixion side. It didn’t feel like I was putting a cross in my room; it was a work of art that moved and intrigued me.

I am not arguing against a secular society. Believe me. I hope one day there’s a place where religion plays no part at all, and science and discovery are worshiped and showered with money instead. I also think religion is generally an outdated and irrelevant system, and I’m not arguing for its promotion in the name of art.

What I’m responding to is when I hear people expressing disgust at the opulence of ancient churches or distaste for any music that has any relationship to God. To each his own. But there’s a further assertion that the world would be so much better if all that time, money, energy, and inspiration went into advancing science and knowledge instead.

That may well be true. But if we really are part of a multiverse, then there’s a version of our world where that did happen. There’s also a version where the U.S. and the Soviet Union destroyed the planet, and one where a space probe comes back infested with a hyper-intelligent sort of jam creature that goes on to form a coalition government with Madagascar.

So speculation doesn’t matter. The past is the past and this is our world. Religion has been the driving force behind shaping so much of our culture, it seems like a losing battle to ignore our history instead of at least studying it, if not embracing it. I don’t personally see the point in rejecting the masterpieces that religion inspired, and that can inspire us no matter what our own views are. I can’t agree with people who assert that religion has never brought any good to the world. Stick with your secular art on principle if that’s important to you — your choice doesn’t affect me, of course — but I can safely say I do love religion for bringing all these things into the world.

Interview: The developers of CellCraft

Last month, I noticed that PZ Myers had written a Pharyngula post about a videogame called CellCraft. I didn’t bother reading it, though, since I prefer it when he’s writing about topics he both likes and knows a lot about, such as biology and religion. Games are not usually one of those topics.

Then I got a private message from a friend who knows I’m a gamer, and who expressed his opinion that PZ was “way off the mark.” Intrigued, I stopped reading immediately to go play, so I could form my own opinions. I found a cute little educational game about cell biology that had some good jokes and an earnest enthusiasm to connect with the player. And then I read the Pharyngula post about it, as well as the comments.

The controversy was interesting to me, because it ranged from very legitimate concerns to issues of game design. But I found PZ’s condemnation of CellCraft as “a creationist game” to be over the top, and the subsequent dismantling of one of the game’s developers in the comments to be unfair. I might have moved on, but this sentence from that developer just stayed with me:

“We knew that we didn’t all agree about evolution, creation, etc., but it didn’t matter — we wanted to teach about the science.”

Being what the hardliners would consider an accommodationist, I thought this notion of “bipartisanship” in science education through games was fascinating, and I wanted to know more. So I present my interview with Anthony Pecorella, who is quoted above, and Lars Doucet, the developers of CellCraft. It’s long, but I hope you will stick with us as we talk about the creation and evolution of the game, its mistakes and misconceptions, issues of science game design and whether people of faith can be scientists. I believe that while there are undeniable red flags concerning the game, they are in the end red herrings, and if you read this interview and remain convinced that CellCraft was designed to teach creationism, I also believe you should apply your own skepticism to that conviction.

Oh my Maker, like, Alistair is such a hottie!

TWO-WAY SPOILER ALERT: I will be talking about Dragon Age: Origins without regard for spoilers. (Except that I won’t discuss the origin story, for your replayability’s sake.) That said, I haven’t finished it, so if you could avoid discussing the ending or major plot points, I’d appreciate it.

I might as well just hand over my ATM card to Bioware, because eventually they get all my money anyway. I just have a thing for their brand of RPG, heavy on the story and relationships but not light on action. I especially like the ones, like Jade Empire, where your actions push you in the direction of an alignment, one good, and one bad-but-we-won’t-explicitly-call-it-that.

My preference is always for the latter type of character, so I was a little disappointed that Dragon Age: Origins doesn’t really have such a system. You spend more time working on your relationships with key characters, or ones you just want your character to get it on with, and their approval of you may increase or decrease depending on your words and actions, and whether you bring them something pretty from time to time. It’s like The Sims: Darkspawn.

So your character’s personal morality can get a little confused given that there aren’t always clear benefits to taking the high, pure ground versus being a lying, thieving snitch. One of your party, Alistair, is a templar — in this case a warrior devoted to hunting down apostate mages for the Chantry (the religious authority). You’d think he might object to your accepting a quest to ditch the bodies of some deals that went south, and you’d really think he’d kick up a fuss when it turns out the well in the Chantry courtyard is the designated dump site. But he takes it entirely in stride, with no relationship penalty.

Since there was no good/bad alignment to work towards, I decided to see if I could play my character as an atheist. This isn’t particularly easy. Early on, I pissed off a priest with some backtalk and that ended any further lines of communication. However, you don’t always have that option. There’s a fairly hilarious scene with an obstreperous older Chanter (like a nun who’s only allowed to talk in Scripture) who appears at first to be mangling the Chant by inserting references to bacon and other things, but it turns out she’s doing it on purpose. With this character, you can have a conversation where you challenge the Chantry. However, when you’re in a conversation with a murderous goon from a different culture, your choices are all in the direction of convincing him that the Chant is a good thing.

You’re given a pretty wide range of ways to interact with people, from obsequiously polite to downright bitchy. But if you decide to have your character behave immorally, such as killing allies and going back on promises, or even just get a little snippy with someone, as a player you end up missing out on content, such as with the priest who didn’t like my challenge to her beliefs. This has been mentioned many times about Bioware games, and especially when the game isn’t set up to accommodate a “bad” or “evil” option, you’re more or less forced to be nice to people you’d rather mock or yell at.

But then there are other curious moments where you lose your ability to make those choices at all. There was one quest that for a while I refused to take, where the Chantry asks you to go help out some soldiers in the employ of the game’s villain, who has personally betrayed you and all you stand for. Eventually I got curious enough to take the quest, at which point my character decided on her own to find out where those soldiers were and kill them. Now, that was my plan all along, but I assumed it was going to be done through dialogue trees and persuasion, like many other similar situations. It further muddies the waters on where my character stands, morally.

Now honestly, these are just my musings as I play an entirely entertaining and addictive game. I really don’t have a problem adapting my expectations of evil glory into a more conventional, but bland, white-knight role. Villains always get the best lines, the best accents, and the best musical numbers, but never mind. The annoying thing about this is I find myself crushing on Alistair. Not just any goody-goody templar (okay, I won’t spoil the rest of that), and in any case he hunts down apostates! It’s completely embarrassing. Oh sure, I’ll be cozying up to the assassin to get him to teach me a few things about sticking knives in people, but what my character really wants is to rip off the warrior’s chainmail and make the good boy do very naughty things. And then I need to go play Fable II and assassinate a few townspeople until I feel okay again. Damn you, Bioware, for allying me with the forces of good!
